UNMISS conducts human rights training in Tambura

20 August 2014 - UNMISS today completed a four-day human rights training for women and youth in Tambura County, Western Equatoria State.

“The workshop (was organized) to increase civil society, youth and women’s groups’ knowledge of human rights and gender-based violence in their communities,” said UNMISS Human Rights Officer Mary Bindi. “(It also tackled) their say in the current peace process.”

Boroberany Justin, a participant, said the workshop was constructive for communities in Tambura County as it had enlightened and given them new ideas and information.

“I learned a lot of things (and) I am going use this knowledge to teach my community members who didn’t have such chance to attend here,” he said. “I think this information will be beneficial to them.”

Another participant, Mary Mborykeno, also pledged to share what she had learned with her community members.

Ms. Mborykeno noted that the workshop had been particularly useful because there were many cases of human rights violations in the county that were not addressed because people were not aware.

“We are suffering here in Tambura as many cases have been happening here, but we didn’t know our rights or how solve the cases,” she said. “(That is how) our rights are mostly violated. We hope such a workshop can continue because people, they don’t anything about human rights or gender-based and sexual violence.”
