New Norwegian envoy visits protection sites in Juba

28 August 2014 - Seeking to see firsthand the living conditions of internally displaced people (IDPs) on UN bases, Tone Tinnes, the new Norwegian Ambassador to South Sudan today visited a protection site near UN House in Juba.

“It’s extremely interesting to see who we are working for,” said Ms. Tinnes. “We have got a good impression of the schools, clinics and ordinary lives.”

The Royal Norwegian envoy in a meeting with the UN Deputy Police Commissioner Sanjay Kundu , said she had formed a better understanding of the overall humanitarian situation, community security and livelihood activities.

“My impression is that it is a very well organized camp,” she said. “You are taking good care of them and we have appreciated that.”

Mr. Kundu highlighted the role of the UN Police protecting civilians, creating conditions for delivery of humanitarian assistance, monitoring and investigating human rights and supporting the implementation of the cessation of hostility agreement.

“Protection of civilians is a priority,” he said. “We will continue to provide security and public order in UNMISS protection sites.”

The UNMISS Head of Operations at protection sites in UN House, Peace Ngoga, listed some of the challenges as lack of lights in shelters, inadequate shelters and over-stretched health services.
