Cattle keepers and farmers meet in Rumbek

16 December 2014 - Following several disputes between farmers and cattle keepers, UNMISS held a one-day conflict mitigation workshop today in Rumbek, Lakes State.

Cattle keepers had been moving their animals from Rumbek East County through Wulu County, damaging local farms.

The workshop aimed to provide a platform where both communities could discuss recurring problems, identify the causes and come up with possible solutions to prevent conflicts in the future.

“It is good to have this roundtable discussion, so people can come together and work together,” Peace Advisor to the Governor Ezikiel Thiang told the gathering. “You young people need to prevent conflict yourself.”

The workshop resolved to set up a special court to address issues triggering conflict between the two communities and agreed that cattle keepers should avoid random movement of their animals.
