UNMISS South Koreans hand over classrooms in Bor

17 December 2014 - Aiming to assist an educational system that is constantly disrupted by conflicts, UNMISS South Korean engineers today handed over a classroom block to Lualdit Primary School in Bor County, Jonglei State.

They also supplied the school with needed materials, including pens, books, desks, blackboards and rulers.

“It is a meaningful occasion to offer the students this classroom building, to help them achieve their education in this deteriorating condition of ethnic conflict,” south Korean Commander Lieutenant Colonel Jong Song said during the launch of the three-room block.

“In order to improve their education in a conducive learning environment ... (the engineers) have supported Lualdit Primary school with educational supplies as well, so that students can devote themselves to studies,” Lt. Col Song added.

Lualdit Pimary School Headmaster William Riak Malith appreciated the South Korean support. “This will improve our education. In South Sudan, we are hungry for education.”

Minister for Cabinet Affairs Samuel Jok Bany urged the school administration to keep the school clean for the good health of students, adding that education in the country would improve.

“The education system in South Sudan still remains crude, but we are very optimistic that with initiatives such as this that the Koreans offer us, the system will improve with time,” he said.

Currently, the South Korean engineers are repairing Bor-Juba road. Two months ago, they completed building a 17-kilometre long dyke in Bor County.
