Unity moves government temporarily to Mayom

15 April 2015 - Unity State’s government is temporarily transferring its capital to Mayom County due to increased insecurity in Bentiu.

Several government officials have already moved to Mankien in Mayom County, some 100 kilometres southwest of Bentiu.

Unity State Minister of Information Peter Makuoth Malual told Radio Miraya that all administrative matters, including payment of salaries, will be handled from Mankien.

Malual said a few offices will remain to provide support in Bentiu. “The government is still available in Bentiu, because we have some ministers still in Bentiu, but the most senior are in Mankien.”

Speaking about citizens returning to Bentiu, Malual said, “Over the last two to three months people have been coming back from the villages to Bentiu town and they were received by the government.”

“We gave them whatever we could provide them, some food and other items,” he added. “We are trying to do whatever we can as a government to supply them with what we have.”
