UNMISS Chief of Staff visits Bentiu

22 July 2015 - UNMISS Chief of Staff Paul Egunsola today visited the Unity State capital Bentiu, where he met Deputy State Governor Mabek Lang and other government officials.

Speaking to Radio Miraya after the meeting, Mr. Egunsola said they had discussed areas of cooperation including facilitation of humanitarian assistance and free movement of humanitarian workers in the state.

“We should not lose direction of why we are here and why the government is here (which is) to help to alleviate the suffering of the people, especially what has been happening since the beginning of the conflict,” said Mr. Egunsola.

They also discussed the reversal of a decision to expel the UNMISS State Coordinator Mary Cummins from the state, he said, adding that he had expressed appreciation to the Deputy Governor for the “mature way in which we were able to resolve the issue.”

“If there is misunderstanding we can discuss it and solve as a team,” said Mr. Lang, adding that the State Government was committed to working with partners to reduce the suffering of the people.
