Displaced women in Malakal learn about conflict management

5 May 2014 - Seeking to promote harmony among displaced people seeking shelter at the UNMISS base in the Upper Nile State capital Malakal, the mission today started training women on their role in peace building.

“Women have big role to play in fostering good neighborliness and reconciliation among people as well” said the Civil Affairs Section team leader Adesola Abolurin. “They will be able to use the skills they get here to overcome future challenges.”

He noted that the two-day training is significant tool for change, not only for the present time, but also in the longer term as women would be able to continue to translate values of peace and reconciliation among their communities.

Some 40 participants attending the training appreciated its importance and called for others to encourage positive interaction between societies.

“We should preach peace rather than incitement and hate speech,” said Mary Gordon Othow. “The only way we can develop our nation is by having peace prevailing.”
