SEA Campaign kicks off in Malakal

16 October 2014 - To raise awareness of sexual exploitation and abuse, UNMISS and partners launched a campaign at the missions protection of civilians site in the Upper Nile State capital Malakal today.

Cecilia Tillada, head of the UNMISS Judiciary Advisory Section, pledged the mission’s support in protecting civilians.

“The mission is here to protect civilians from any physical violence, including sexual exploitation and abuse,” said Ms. Tillada.

Joan Scott, Civil Affairs Officer, urged the local community to hold onto their dignity. “You should not give up your dignity because of money. Your dignity is more important than money.”

During the event, the local community preformed traditional dances and songs on peace and unity.

Prior to the launch on 14 October, UNMISS organized an open discussion with IDP representatives on SEA. Participants identified war, poverty, money and lack of accountability as key causes of SEA in the protection area.

They called upon parents to take the initiative in preventing SEA, rather than waiting for other people from outside.
