Wau IDPs discuss people-to-people peace and reconciliation

25 March 2015 - Women internally displaced persons in the Wau Protection of Civilians site today held discussed people-to-people peace and reconciliation.

In a group discussion, organized by UNMISS, the women were briefed about what a people-to-people peace and reconciliation process meant and how it worked.

Ms. Nifeda, one of the participants, said, “Politicians should focus on politics rather than tribal matters,” adding that it was unfortunate to have such problems in the young nation.

“We never thought South Sudan would reach this state of crisis,” she said. "The South Sudanese will forget their troubled past and what is happening right now and instead look forward together.”

Another participant, Ms. Nachar, stated that women and children were the most vulnerable groups and victims of the conflict. “It is good for the people to talk about peace and reconciliation because sooner or later all IDPs will return home and start leading normal lives.”

“I believe it’s not difficult for the people to reconcile and forget the past once political peace prevails at the leadership level,” she stressed.

According to Ms. Nachar, South Sudanese have a strong culture and tradition of bringing about peace and reconciliation.
The participants appealed to UNMISS and the international community to support South Sudan to bring last peace.
