Humanitarian action essential in Jonglei

Juba, 6 May 2013: “I am deeply concerned about the humanitarian situation in Jonglei State, where thousands of civilians are in need of assistance and protection, and where humanitarian workers have treated more than 450 casualties, including children, since February. We have seen houses burned down and civilian property destroyed. Facilities such as schools and health centres have been robbed, looted and occupied by armed actors. In the past week, hostilities in Maruwa Hills, Pibor County, forced scores of civilians to flee their homes and aid agencies to relocate their staff.

I came from New York to discuss with the Government of South Sudan, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan, and bilateral partners the challenges in the strategic areas of justice, military justice, corrections, police, DDR, SSR and mine action as well as the best way to deal with priorities in these areas, and in other key aspects of UNMISS work to support the Government of South Sudan, such as protection of civilians and building a national dialogue and reconciliation.

UNMISS condemns killing of peacekeepers and civilians

9 April 2013 - Hilde F. Johnson, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in South Sudan, condemns in the strongest terms the killing today of five peacekeepers and seven civilians working with UNMISS in an ambush by unidentified assailants near the settlement of Gumuruk, Jonglei State. At least nine additional peacekeepers and civilians were injured in the attack and some remain unaccounted for.

Freedom of expression and safety of journalists is paramount

10 February 2013 - South Sudan has now become a pilot country for the UN Plan of Action on the safety of journalists and the issue of impunity. The Plan of Action aims to create a free and safe environment for journalists and media workers. The Minister of Information and Broadcasting, Barnaba Benjamin Marial has committed to South Sudan becoming a pilot country.

Award of the 2013 Sergio Vieira de Mello Peace Prize to Bishop Emeritus Paride Taban

09 February 2013 - The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) extends its warm congratulations to Bishop Emeritus Paride Taban on the award of the 2013 Sergio Vieira de Mello Peace Prize. Today, a prominent South Sudanese actor for peace has been given a richly-deserved recognition of his efforts and accomplishments in building trust and peace between different communities in the Holy Trinity Peace Village in Kuron, in the Eastern Equatoria State.

UNMISS increasing concern over violence in Jonglei State

31 August - The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is increasingly concerned by recent violence in Jonglei state that threatens the important gains made this year in restoring peace and security. UNMISS is particularly concerned by the apparent emergence in Jonglei of an armed insurgency group linked to the militia leader David Yau Yau, which is believed to be acting in concert with groups of armed youths who have evaded the civilian disarmament operation in the state.

UNMISS condemns attack against South Sudanese troops in Jonglei State

 27 August 2012 -The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) condemns the attack by armed insurgents against South Sudanese troops in Jonglei State reported to have taken place on 23 August and to have claimed the lives of 24 soldiers, with many more missing and injured.
