Who we are
UN Police (UNPOL) are vital in helping to promote peace and security. Every day UN policemen and women work closely with and advise domestic police, helping to ensure compliance with international human rights standards and assisting in a wide range of activities to restore and promote public safety and the rule of law.
Establishing the rule of law is essential to achieving sustainable peace. The fundamental purpose of UN Police is to build institutional capacity in post-conflict environments and help secure the environment.
The UNMISS UNPOL force comprises more than 530 men and women coming from 38 countries. Their core activities are training, policing, police reform, protection of civilians.
«In addition to protecting individuals, they [UN Police] help society as a whole by redefining the role of policing in countries emerging from conflict, forging trust in uniformed police, establishing faith in national justice systems and fostering confidence in peace processes.»
