The Imotong State Children for Peace Group employed songs and drama to share messages of peace during a rally organized by the State Peace Commission with support from UNMISS. The event was held in Torit Freedom Square to celebrate the International Day of Peace 2016.

The Deputy Governor, Dr. Margaret Itto, said that peace is the first priority for her government. In fact it is the reason the State Governor could not attend the festivities; he is touring different counties this week to encourage the communities to co-exist peacefully.

She called on the people of the State to reject tribalism, cattle rustling, road robbery, domestic violence and focus on love and unity which can lead to peace and development in the state. She asked the UNMISS to support state peace commission.

She stressed, “We need peaceful co-existence and all are the same before justice, equality, respect for human rights, transparency and accountability.”

The UNMISS Head of Field Office in Torit, Mary Cummins, commended the state government on the tireless work they are doing by travelling around the counties of this state and reaching out to the communities to try to encourage people to live together in peace and in harmony. She said it’s the responsibility of all of us to make this state a better place for its people.

Ms. Cummins said, “All of us can do things that make the world a better place, that makes this beautiful country a better place, that makes this lovely state a better place, that makes this town a better place.”

She went on to say, “War is not the answer to anything. We must all try to make peace a personal choice, an active choice every day through  small acts of love, compassion, forgiveness, empathy, cooperation and understanding, thereby contributing to the culture of peace in South Sudan.”

Joseph Oswaha Osuru, Chairman of the Imotong Peace Commission, thanked the mission and all partners, and said that the International Day of Peace is for all including South Sudan.

“This day is not only for international people but also for us, we thank you, the United Nations and other partners for your support and helping us to identify potential problems to address and resolve in our communities,” said Mr. Oswaha Osuru.
