Joint Press Release: International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action (IMAD) 2024

On 4 April 2024, The National Mine Action Authority (NMAA), in partnership with the United Nations Mine Action Service (UNMAS), and the Geneva International Center for Humanitarian Demining (GICHD), will commemorate the International Day for Mine Awareness and Assistance in Mine Action on 4 April 2024, under the theme ‘Protecting Lives, Building Peace.’

This year, the annual event will be further strengthened by the preliminary launch of the National Mine Action Strategy, developed in partnership with the GICHD.

The nationally led commemoration is youth-focused, with a performance by a local musician and engagements with school students on their moulded art.

Highlights also include speeches by Honourable Angelina Teny, Minister of Interior Affairs; UNMISS, NMAA and mine action partners; as well as the launch of the National Mine Action Authority Law.

Every year, this significant International Day presents an opportunity to bring together all partners to highlight the importance of mine action in protecting girls, boys, women, and men in communities across South Sudan from the threat of dangerous explosive items. Doing so enables children to play and resume education in safer environments, facilitates the safe movement and resettlement of internally displaced people, returnees, and refugees; and provides communities with a safe ground to build sustainable livelihoods.

All media are invited to join us at 9:00 a.m. in Imperial Hotel, Juba.
