Media in Juba stage three-day blackout over journalist’s killing

21 August 2015 - Juba journalists have declared three days of mourning following the death of Peter Moi Julius, who worked for the city’s corporate business newspaper.

The bullet-riddled body of Peter Moi was discovered on Thursday close to his home in in Jebel, a Juba suburb.

Members of the Union of Journalists of South Sudan met this morning and resolved to put down their pens, paper, and cameras for three days.

Edward Ladu Terriso, Secretary General of the Union of Journalists of South Sudan, told Radio Miraya no newspapers would be on display this Saturday.

“This blackout will be one day as a message to the authorities that a crime has happened,” he said. “It should be … investigated and even victims compensated. This is the message. This is the objective. We are not a political party, we are media people.”

Terriso also asked the government to ensure protection of journalists in South Sudan.

“Any crime against journalists is a crime against freedom of expression and it is a crime against the people,” Mr. Terriso said. “The death of Peter Moi and the death of other journalists was a crime against the people, a punishment.”
