Mingkaman hosts a tripartite peace conference

The states of Eastern Lakes, Terkeka and Jonglei in a move to halt road ambushes and cattle rustling, held a three day peace conference at Mingkaman. The forum started on 26 and ended on 28 September 2016, supported by VISTAS.

Briefing the integrated team of the UNMISS upon arrival to Yirol town, the Eastern Lakes Minister of Information, Mr. Nelson Marial Makoi, unveiled the resolutions of the conference.

“There are about fifteen points resolved by the conference to help stability of the three states, they also resolved to form a high committee at state level comprising of 9 members, three from each state and they will be called peace and reconciliation advisors”, Marial said.

The meeting also recommended the formation of a joint border force to secure major roads linking the states.

“We also agreed to the establishment of a joint border force that will be responsible for security along the roads, and  a joint border court, to settle pending and emerging cases which are affecting the communities”, Marial emphasized.

The conference stressed the need for total disarmament of the civilian population in the three states as well as the application of capital punishment for illegal activity resulting in a fatality.
