Juba, 23 July 2014 - United Nations Secretary-General BAN Ki-Moon today announced the appointment of Ellen Margrethe Løj of Denmark as his new Special Representative and Head of the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS).

Violent clashes between armed forces have led to more than 16,000 civilians being displaced in Western Bahr El Ghazal. To better understand the conditions, protection and other needs of the persons having fled their homes, UNMISS accompanied a State Committee on an assessment mission.
In their search for safety, returnees as well as refugees fleeing the Sudan crisis face a variety of challenges during their journey through South Sudan. At Bulukat in Malakal, joint efforts by UNHCR, IOM and UNMISS have led to a transit center providing short-term relief to hundreds of people passing through each week.
