Juba, 26 Aug 2011 – The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) today announced that it had begun deploying peacekeepers and teams of civilian experts to vulnerable areas of Jonglei State.

Violent clashes between armed forces have led to more than 16,000 civilians being displaced in Western Bahr El Ghazal. To better understand the conditions, protection and other needs of the persons having fled their homes, UNMISS accompanied a State Committee on an assessment mission.
In their search for safety, returnees as well as refugees fleeing the Sudan crisis face a variety of challenges during their journey through South Sudan. At Bulukat in Malakal, joint efforts by UNHCR, IOM and UNMISS have led to a transit center providing short-term relief to hundreds of people passing through each week.
