Waste management and recycling improves in UNMISS camp

In an effort to implement the UNMISSs’ policy on a safe environment mission administration in Aweil has embarked on a waste collection and recycling management system.

Speaking to the CPI Section in an exclusive interview, Field Administration Officer, Bassam ASMAR said that the UNMISS must lead by example within the community.

“I think we are far better than before, we must be an example in terms of a waste management system. The camp is improving and we are working hard to make sure that our environment is clean and up to the UN standards.” hailed Bassam.

Felician Freeman, Facilities Management officer, explained the modern process being implemented throughout the camp and went on to state; “After we collect the garbage into one location we separate it into three different containers.  The first container is for plastics and plastic bottles, the second is for grass, leaves and wood.  The third container is for the collection of food remnants.”

Curious as to how the new management system is effecting the well-being of the mission staff the CPI Section spoke with Langiwe Mwale, Civil Affairs officer and resident.

Mr. Mwale went on to describe the tremendous improvement, “We I have been here for one year, and I found it one of cleanest camps, getting better each and every day, one doesn’t find littering around the compound any longer, and bins have been enclosed in such a way that cats and dogs can no longer temper with the waste in search of food.”
