Young artists showcase visions of peace and unity during UN Day
WESTERN EQUATORIA – “Let our leaders be united. Let them stand with us as one people so we can progress,” said Shamin Jackline, a young participant, expressing the collective aspiration of South Sudan’s youth during an arts competition in Yambio, where young artists showcased their creativity in a vibrant display of color and rhythm, advocating for positive change.
Students from secondary schools in Western Equatoria state’s capital came together for an interschool arts competition, organized by the United Nations family, including the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), to celebrate the Organization’s 80th anniversary.
Themed ‘Building Our Future Together,’ the performances and artwork spoke to simple yet eloquent aspirations: Through modern dance and visual representations, young students shared stories of resilience, reconciliation, and the hope for a peaceful future.
Additionally, a tree-planting initiative was launched to promote a healthier environment for future generations, in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals which advocate for sustainable economic growth, peace, environmental stewardship, and improved livelihoods, among others.
“We reaffirm our dedication to environmental initiatives and promoting sustainable livelihoods,” stated Justin Joseph Marona, Acting State Governor. “For reconciliation, peacebuilding, and stabilization to take root in our society, such activities and we hope that the UN will continue supporting us,” he added.
For Papy Christian from UNMISS’ Field Office in Yambio, Partnerships between the UN and local communities are vital.
"Western Equatoria has made significant strides toward reconciliation and stability, and the UN is working closely with the community to support peace initiatives. We remain dedicated to fostering dialogue and understanding," he stated Papy Christian.
As the Yambio sunset faded, the message from the young artists was clear—unity and lasting peace are the only way forward for a brighter, better South Sudan in the years to come.
