Ethiopians join community in cleaning up Bor market

18 December 2014 - Seeking to improve sanitary conditions in Marol Market in Bor, Jonglei State, UNMISS Ethiopian peacekeepers today joined town residents in a cleaning campaign.

Ethiopian soldier Negas Mesfin said peacekeeping was not only about security. “Peacekeeping does not only mean protection and providing security to people, but also participating with the community in their activities.”

Bor Municipal Field Health Supervisor Garang Jacob Deng said the idea was to prepare Bor for the festive season, and also remove rubbish that had accumulated during the conflict.

“We have to clean the town to look good. That is why we mobilized the people,” he said. “The only problem that we face is lack of equipment for ferrying the garbage. We have only one tractor, which is not enough to cover the entire town.”

Joining the Ethiopians in the cleanup were Bor Town Council members, business people who closed their shops and local residents, who spent many hours picking up litter in the market.
