UNSMIL welcomes the establishment on of the National Ad Hoc Committee for Prison and Detainees Oversight

UNSMIL welcomes all efforts to address the human rights of detainees with a particular focus on addressing arbitrary detentions, a widespread practice in Libya, and ensuring full civilian oversight of all detention facilities. In this regard, UNSMIL welcomes the positive step of the establishment on 23 December in Benghazi of the National Ad Hoc Committee for Prison and Detainees Oversight. We hope that this initiative, along with the Rights Oversight Committee for Prisons and Detention Centers established on 4 June 2025 in Tripoli and the ongoing efforts of the Attorney General, will effectively address arbitrary detentions, improve conditions in detention facilities and advance human rights and rule of law throughout Libya. The Mission stands ready to provide technical support and assistance in line with international standards.
