The Community Empowerment for Progress Organization (CEPO) is establishing a community radio in Yirol West County, of Eastern Lakes. The UNESCO-funded project will target the community members in and around Yirol Town including cattle keepers. According to the information released by CEPO, the new radio station will enhance peace building, reconciliation and democracy.

Lakes CEPO Coordinator Mr. Isaac Majier Majok says that the station, once up and running, will have a great impact on residents of Yirol.

“The FM radio shall lay a strong platform for freedom of expression. It will educate, inform and entertain communities of the eastern part of Lakes State.”

Majier asserts that the radio station, yet to be named, shall be independent and managed by members of the community.

“CEPO will not tolerate any interference, intimidations or threats geared towards the radio by any individual or entity. It will operate independently, professionally and ethically.”

Meanwhile residents of Yirol town welcome the news and are eager to start listening to the new programming.

Mr. John Agok Awel expressed optimism that the launch of FM radio, expected to happen in a couple of months’ time, will bring change in the state.

“I can’t wait to tune to this radio here in Yirol. Our people have no single FM radio, and that is why it is going to bring about much needed change as far as access to information is concerned.”

Ms. Mary Nyibeny applauded CEPO and UNESCO for opening their ears to hear what happens in and around the country.

“I would like to thank CEPO and UNESCO for giving the communities of Yirol a community radio station that makes us know what is going on in Eastern Lakes and South Sudan at large. “

CEPO expects the radio to go on air in two months’ time. The radio shall be jointly managed by CEPO and a Board of Governors to be drawn from the community for the first six months. After that, CEPO will hand over the administration of the radio station to the community.
