Heavy fighting erupts in Malakal, 10 die at UNMISS base

18 February 2014 - Some 10 people died at the UNMISS hospital in the Upper Nile capital Malakal after heavy fighting broke out earlier today between pro-government and opposition forces near the mission compound.

Simultaneously, inter-communal clashes flared up within the UNMISS compound where 21,568 internally displaced persons are seeking refuge, who also came under crossfire.

The fighting, which began early in the morning, appeared to have subsided, although there were continued reports of gunfire and mortars being heard in the area.

The 10 deaths resulted from injuries received both inside and outside the UNMISS compound.

The mission strongly condemned in a statement those who instigated violence inside its base.

“Continued fighting between the parties… will only exacerbate an already dire situation for the civilian population and undermine efforts to stabilize the situation in South Sudan,” the statement said.

It stated that violence on the compound was contained by UNMISS troops and Formed Police Units, and that firearms had not been used in the clashes. “Unfortunately, casualties were later sustained.”

All UN staff stationed at the mission’s compound were safe and accounted for, with none requiring medical attention, the statement said.

“UNMISS stresses that both parties to this conflict must respect the inviolability of the premises and facilities of the United Nations,” the statement added. “It also reiterates UNMISS’ impartial role in the current crisis and its commitment to protect all civilians, whatever their background.”

The mission called on all parties to fully comply with the Cessation of Hostilities Agreement signed on 23 January in Addis Ababa.

“It falls on both sides to ensure a swift establishment of the monitoring and verification mechanism which is critical for progress in the negotiations and for a peaceful settlement of the conflict,” the statement said.
