The United Nations Mission in South Sudan works to protect civilians, facilitate the safe delivery of humanitarian aid, promote human rights, and build durable peace.
Civilian and uniformed peacekeepers carry out diverse duties under a mandate determined by the United Nations Security Council, including:
Protection of Civilians
The Government of South Sudan has primary responsibility for protecting civilians. However, peacekeepers actively patrol in communities to provide a protective presence and deter violence through a comprehensive and integrated approach. The mission also uses its good offices to help prevent, mitigate and resolve intercommunal violence.
Creating conditions conducive to the delivery of humanitarian assistance
Peacekeepers help create a secure environment to enable the safe, timely and unhindered delivery of humanitarian assistance to people in need across the country.
Supporting the implementation of the revitalized agreement and the peace process
As an impartial partner, UNMISS uses targeted good offices and facilitates dialogue between the parties in support of the peace process and to prevent escalation of political violence. It also monitors and reports on progress on security sector and legal reforms as well as election-related process and transitional justice mechanisms.
Monitoring and investigating human rights
UNMISS monitors, investigates, and reports on violations and abuses of international human rights and humanitarian law. Incidents of intentional dissemination of false information and incitement to violence are also investigated. Technical support is provided to other mechanisms investigating and reporting on violations and abuses.
