UN Peacekeeping UNMISS UNPOL United Nations Police

The United Nations Police (UNPOL) work to protect civilians from threats of physical violence, monitor and reports on abuses and violations of human rights and international humanitarian law, support the safe delivery of humanitarian assistance and the implementation of the revitalized peace agreement.

At the United Nations Protection of Civilians site in Malakal, UNPOL undertakes specific duties to provide a safe environment for displaced families, such as patrols to prevent conflict and build trust and confidence, cordon and search operations to maintain the civilian nature of the site, screening access control, security incident assessments and engagement with community leaders and other stakeholders.

UNPOL also supports the safe, voluntary return of displaced people to their homes by carrying out visibility patrols and working closely with the South Sudan National Police Service to create safer environments in communities across the country.

To build the capacity and effectiveness of the South Sudan Police Service and other national law enforcement agencies, UNPOL provides technical assistance and advice in line with human rights principles and international humanitarian law, including helping to develop policies and guidelines and improve policing processes.

UNPOL also conducts community policing exercises to strengthen community involvement in crime prevention and to build partnerships with the people we serve.
