AU Envoy commends UNMISS work in Malakal

Malakal, 14 March 2017 – The African Union high representative for South Sudan, Alpha Oumar Konaré, has applauded the United National Mission in South Sudan for its role in protecting civilians sheltered at its base in Malakal.

Mr. Konare led a delegation to Malakal recently, as part of his efforts to strengthening the ties between government and its International counterparts such as the United Nations and its agencies, plus other humanitarian partners.

The AU envoy toured  the protection of civilian’s site and spoke directly with Internally Displaced Persons in the camp. He encouraged them to accept dialogue as one of the best options for healing and reconciliation.

“My mission here is to establish and encourage each and every one of you in this country, to accept dialogue as the only tool for bringing an end to this suffering,” said Konare.

According to the latest Protection of Civilians site update, the protection of Civilians site in Malakal is home to 30,575 internally displaced persons.  

Mr. Konare together with his delegation met with the newly appointed governor of central Upper Nile Mr. James Tor Monybony and toured the market in Malakal.

This was the first trip by  the African union high representative for South Sudan to Malakal.
