JUBA – At a farewell parade that was both poignant and celebratory, the outgoing Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS), Lieutenant General Mohan Subramanian, lauded the bravery of troops serving under him while reaffirming the value and effectiveness of UN Peacekeeping.

“UN Peacekeeping is as relevant today as it will be in the future to prevent conflict in the first place, and to protect civilians. From my perspective, peacekeeping missions are perhaps the most reliable, cost effective and efficient tool for promoting peace globally,” stated Force Commander Subramanian.

Since 2022, Force Commander Subramanian has navigated some of the country’s most difficult moments, from the devastation of historic flooding to the persistent threat of violence. During this time, he travelled extensively to South Sudan’s most volatile regions to see first-hand how UNMISS protected civilians, while also boosting the morale of the troops who reported to him.

Speaking at today’s commemoration, the Force Commander reflected on the numerous challenges, achievements, and initiatives he implemented. From boosting night patrols in potential hotspots to his emphasis on gender-inclusive patrolling, his work has had a tangible impact on communities.

“The Force Commander’s policy initiatives, particularly mixed gender patrolling, makes us a more effective protective presence on the ground. Women make up 50 percent of any society. As a peacekeeping mission, we must reflect that in our own ranks and our engagements with communities,” explained Kylie Watson from the Australian Airforce, who attended the ceremony.

As he inspected the final Honour Guard by peacekeepers from China, Bangladesh, Nepal and India, the rhythmic crunch of boots on gravel visibly moved him, as it also marked the end of a remarkable 40-year career with the Indian Army.

Military, police, and civilian colleagues gathered at the Mission’s headquarters in Juba to farewell a respected leader and pay tribute to his dedicated service to the cause of sustained peace in South Sudan.

As Force Commander Subramanian prepares to conclude his tenure, he departs not just as a high-ranking UN official, but as a leader who prioritizes community partnerships.

“If someone questions me about the effectiveness of UNMISS, I always tell them to think of what it would mean for the people of any conflict-ridden country if the support provided by peacekeeping missions didn’t exist. And I think that is a fitting answer.”
