Mongolian President visits South Sudan

15 February 2013 - Visiting his country's peacekeeping troops in South Sudan, Mongolian President Tsakhiagiin Elbegdorj arrived in the Unity State capital of Bentiu today.

"I'm a military officer, I know the challenges of the soldier's life," President Elbegdorj said, addressing the Mongolian soldiers at UNMISS Bentiu. "I'm coming here to give you motivation and encouragement."

Some 850 Mongolian soldiers and seven staff officers are currently serving in South Sudan, making up a sixth of the country's total peacekeeping troops.

Mongolia has been contributing to UN peacekeeping operations for more than 10 years, sending 10,000 peacekeepers to various countries worldwide.

Also speaking at the event, UNMISS Chief of Political Affairs Hiruy Amanuel expressed hope that the presence of Mongolian peacekeepers would result in closer ties between their country and South Sudan.

President Elbegdorj began his visit in Juba, where he was welcomed by South Sudanese President Salva Kiir. He will also visit Mongolians stationed in Rumbek, Lakes State.
