CENTRAL EQUATORIA - Durable peace is achieved when all citizens actively shape their country's future.

To promote civic education, facilitate community dialogue, and ensure inclusive participation, the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) is hosting a series of dialogues aimed at fostering engagement at the grassroots level.

This includes launching the “Community Sensitization and Civic Education Campaign” for the Civil Society Network in Central Equatoria, focusing on constitutional making and electoral processes.

The event attracted high-level engagement, including Deputy Governor, Paulino Lokudu, officials from the Relief and Rehabilitation Commission, UNMISS representatives, led by the Head of the Central Equatoria Field Office, various international organizations, and civil society entities.

Shamila Abdalla, Chairperson of the Central Equatoria State Civil Society Network, stressed the importance of raising awareness before the extended transitional period ends in 2026.

“It is essential for all citizens to be well-informed and actively engaged. This campaign aims to educate and sensitize citizens about their roles in the political developments, promote peaceful participation, and encourage democratic governance in Central Equatoria,” she stated.

Abraham Atem, the Civil Society Network Coordinator, highlighted the importance of grassroots communities being fully engaged.

“Our focus is on youth, women, and people with disabilities. Together, we can promote issues related to peace, democracy, and human rights,” he stated.

Speaking on behalf of UNMISS, Njoki Kinyanjui expressed her enthusiasm for the project.

“Today, we are hearing calls to amplify the voices of women, youth, and other marginalized groups. This is essential for promoting inclusion. This project is designed to reach the communities directly,” she emphasized.

Deputy Governor Paulino Lokudu stressed that this initiative aligns with the state’s strategic vision.

“Our goal is to achieve lasting peace and security by empowering local communities through agriculture and cooperative societies,” he declared. “The state government is committed to ensuring this reaches every corner of Central Equatoria State.”
