    Freedom of expression essential for peace in conflict-affected South Sudan – UN report

    22 Feb 2018 - Genuine reconciliation and lasting peace will only be achieved in South Sudan if people are free and safe to express their opinions regardless of their ethnic or political affiliations, says a UN report released today. The report warns that undue restrictions on freedom of expression are having a “chilling effect” and “further shrinking the space for debate and dissent” in the conflict-affected country, while hate speech also continues to cause mistrust, fear and violence.

    27 Jan 2018 - One year ago, it was obvious to me that it was absolutely essential to overcome some misunderstandings of the past and to make sure that there would be a full alignment of the United Nations and the African Union and IGAD, in the conduct of the international community in addressing the problems South Sudan and the plight of the people of South Sudan. I think this alignment has been very successful. What has been achieved under the leadership of IGAD is remarkable.
  • 27 Jan 2018 - The United Nations Mission in South Sudan has today conducted a search operation within the Protection of Civilians site next to its base in Juba to determine whether individuals allegedly involved in the abduction and killing of three people in the capital last week were located within the camp. A number of suspects were apprehended and handed over to the South Sudan National Police Service to investigate further.

  • 20 Dec 2017 - The first Protection of Civilians site has been successfully closed in South Sudan after internally displaced families expressed the desire and confidence to return to their former homes. The site, next to the United Nations base in Melut in the Upper Nile region, had provided sanctuary to hundreds of families since the civil war broke out four years ago.

The Secretary-General is convinced that with full backing by the region and the wider international community, this Forum provides a unique opportunity to bring all the parties to the conflict and other stakeholders to the negotiation table.

    Nepalese Peacekeepers receive UN Medal

    12 Dec 2017 - The Nepalese peacekeeping contingent deployed in Rumbek, Western Lakes, has been awarded the United Nations peacekeeping medal in recognition of their outstanding work in South Sudan. The medals were awarded by the UNMISS Force Commander, Lt. General Frank Mushyo Kamanzi, and other senior UNMISS officials.
