    Statement on Malakal Attributable to the Office of the Spokesperson, UNMISS Juba, 29 January, 2017

    30 Jan 2017 - The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) remains deeply concerned about the outbreak of fighting between the SPLA and SPLA in Opposition in and around Malakal town, including intermittent shelling that has been reported over the last few days. UNMISS reports that on Sunday, the situation in the town remained tense. The Mission continues to patrol regularly in Malakal and reports that the town is largely deserted.

    20 Jan 2017 - The new Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) for South Sudan and Head of the United Nations Mission in the Republic of South Sudan (UNMISS), Mr. David Shearer (New Zealand), has arrived in the country to assume his duties.  Mr. Shearer succeeds Ms. Ellen Margrethe Løj, who completed her assignment at the end of November 2016, after serving for almost three years.
