It is a great pleasure for me to welcome all of you to the National Women’s Open Days Conference on Peace and Security. I am honoured to have the opportunity to open this conference that addresses issues that are dear to my heart.
30 May 2017 - When I entered the United Nations Secretariat building for the first time as Secretary-General in January, my first act was to lay a wreath honoring more than 3,500 United Nations staff who died in the service of peace. Later that same week, two Blue Helmets were killed in the Central African Republic, where they were working to prevent violent confrontations between communities from descending into mass killings.

29 May 2017 - The Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General in South Sudan and the head of the UN peacekeeping mission, David Shearer, has announced the arrival of Lieutenant General Frank Mushyo Kamanzi of Rwanda as Force Commander of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS).
26 May 2017 - The United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) welcomes the release of George Livio, its national staff member who has been in detention since August 2014 without trial.
The Mission calls for the release of its two other national staff members who are currently also being held in detention without trial since 2014.
25 May 2017 - Africa Day 2017 comes at an important moment in the continent’s endeavours towards peace, inclusive economic growth and sustainable development.
The international community has entered the second year of implementing the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, an all-out effort to tackle global poverty, inequality, instability and injustice. Africa has adopted its own complementary and ambitious plan: Agenda 2063.

We are here today to honour the 117 men and woman from 43 countries who lost their lives last year serving under the United Nations flag.
The medal we confer at today’s ceremony is named after my predecessor, Dag Hammarskjöld, who lost his life in the cause of peace, like the recipients of this medal.
24 May 2017 - A coherent and unified regional approach on solving the conflict in South Sudan has been urged by the head of the UN peacekeeping mission in the country (UNMISS) who described it as “critical” in helping to bring an end to fighting.
David Shearer, who is also the Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General, was addressing a meeting of the UN Security Council in New York on Wednesday via video link from the South Sudanese capital, Juba.
