  • The Special Representative of the Secretary-General/Head of UNMISS, David Shearer, held a virtual press conference on COVID-19 at the mission's headquarters in Juba, South Sudan, today.

    07 May 2020 - As you will be aware, South Sudan currently has 74 confirmed COVID-19 cases. This means the virus is present in the broader community. South Sudan is not alone in this respect. It joins nearly every other country in the world with positive cases. And, it is likely that the number of cases will increase.

    05 Apr 2020 - Juba, South Sudan, 5 April 2020: The United Nations in South Sudan has confirmed a case of corona virus disease (COVID-19) among its staff. The Ministry of Health and the World Health Organization (WHO) are leading the investigation by epidemiologists to test people recently in contact with the patient in accordance with agreed protocols. The patient has been resident in South Sudan for five weeks.

    23 Mar 2020 - The United Nations Mission in South Sudan has put a seven-day freeze on staff travelling into South Sudan as part of the peacekeeping mission’s support for national-led COVID-19 prevention efforts. The decision will apply to all personnel except those who are critical to continuing UNMISS operations. Cargo flights will continue. The decision is effective at 23:59 Monday 23 March 2020.

    05 Mar 2020 - Often when I brief the Security Council on South Sudan, the news is not encouraging. However, today is different. There have been positive developments that have moved the country further along the road to sustainable peace. On 15 February, President Salva Kiir – against the wishes of many of his supporters – agreed to compromise to return South Sudan to its pre-2015 position of 10 states, although he added three administrative areas.
