UNMISS strongly condemns the violence, looting and displacement affecting civilians and humanitarian organizations that have occurred in recent days in Pibor.

We have seen houses burned down and civilian property destroyed. Facilities such as schools and health centres have been robbed, looted and occupied by armed actors.

  • 09 Apr 2013 - 9 April 2013 - Hilde F. Johnson, Special Representative of the Secretary-General in South Sudan, condemns in the strongest terms the killing today of five peacekeepers and seven civilians working with UNMISS in an ambush by unidentified assailants near the settlement of Gumuruk, Jonglei State. At least nine additional peacekeepers and civilians were injured in the attack and some remain unaccounted for.
  • 08 Apr 2013 - Juba, 8 April 2013 - The United Nations Mission in South Sudan calls upon the country's authorities to take all necessary steps to protect civilians during military operations in Jonglei State. All communities and state bodies in Jonglei need to take urgent measures to prevent the mobilization of armed youth to carry out retaliatory attacks that would trigger another deadly cycle of inter-communal violence.

"Unless community leaders and government authorities take decisive action to stop the violence, stability in the whole of Jonglei state will be at stake," she said, following a two-day visit to the areas hardest hit by recent instability and cattle raiding.
