UNMISS funded Quick Impact Project - Water Point in Malith, Rumbek Town

In August 2015 UNMISS funded a water point in Malith area of Rumbek Town as a Quick Impact Project. The project was implemented by the NGO Sign of Hope.

The water point serves 75 households, as well as a primary school.

The primary school provides education to 30 children, from 6 to 8 years. Because of the vicinity of the water point lessons can continue uninterrupted.

After the water point was established, the school started farming inside the compound to provide food for the children.

The community has set up a committee to manage the water point. This includes collecting money from the households for the maintenance and repair. Those with no means are exempted from financial contributions.

The committee also contributed to the water point with the creation of sand bags, to avoid flooding of the area during the rainy season.

Due to the vicinity of the water point, the women in Malith have started farming. Crops include kusamawiki, tomatoes, kundra, ground nuts, maize and tamalekka.

The households are no longer depending upon the market for their consumption. The gardens produce so many crops, that the women can even sell the surplus at the market, earning an average of 50 ssp per day.

This money helps the households to improve their lives. For example, with the extra income the women buy soap, sugar, grain etc.

Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) are small scale projects of benefit to the population. Aim of the projects is to build confidence among the population in the Mission’s mandate, as well as contribute to the Mission’s tasks. Currently, UNMISS Rumbek is implementing three QIPS: renovation of a school in Cueibet Town; renovation of a vocational centre for women; and a peace hall.
