Protecting civilians is the ultimate goal of UN peacekeeping
Protecting civilians is the ultimate goal of UN Peacekeeping; according to the chief of the Department of Peacekeeping Operations (DPKO), Jean-Pierre Lacroix. He was speaking ahead of the International Day of UN Peacekeepers observed annually on 29 May.

1. Thank you for the opportunity to brief the Council on the situation in South Sudan and the deployment of the Regional Protection Force.
PEACE AGREEMENT SIGNED BETWEEN JONGLEI AND BOMA STATES
An agreement to cease hostilities has been signed by two warring communities from the Jonglei and Boma regions in South Sudan in an attempt to end ongoing violence, including child abductions and cattle raiding.
A coherent and unified regional approach on solving the conflict in South Sudan has been urged by the head of the UN peacekeeping mission in the country (UNMISS) who described it as “critical” in helping to bring an end to fighting.

GENEVA/JUBA (19 May 2017) - A United Nations report published today released the findings of an in-depth investigation into human rights violations and abuses committed in and around Yei town, Central Equatoria (150km southwest of the capital, Juba) between July 2016 and January 2017.
