Statement by Nicholas Haysom, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General and Head of UNMISS, on South Sudan's 13th Independence Day

JUBA - On the 13th anniversary of South Sudan’s independence, I’d like to assure you of the UN family’s continued support to this country’s people and leaders as you navigate a complex path to peace and democratic transition.

For the historic achievement of independence to be truly meaningful, there must be considered and collective actions that inspire this nation’s diverse communities to arrive at a shared vision of a more peaceful, inclusive, just, and prosperous society for all.

The story of South Sudan’s freedom is, therefore, contingent on the freedoms that should belong to every citizen being fully realized—their human rights; their freedom of expression; their full and equal participation in political and peace processes; full respect for and inclusion of women, girls, the disabled, and the marginalized in all decisions that matter; and importantly, a thriving, safe, and open civic space.

In past weeks, I have been heartened to see South Sudanese across the country holding conversations about the challenges they face, as well as the opportunities, and taking decisions to move surely towards consensus on the better future they want to forge.

Now is the time to build on this momentum and ensure that the dream of sustainable peace, democracy, and development becomes a reality.

The UN stands with you every step of the way.

Happy Independence Day!
