Bentiu displaced vaccinated against cholera

16 June 2015 - With the rainy season intensifying and conditions worsening at camps for the displaced, more than 60,000 people at UNMISS Bentiu protection sites have been vaccinated against cholera.

The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in collaboration with UNICEF and the World Health Organization administered the vaccines.

“We vaccinated an estimated 69,000 people, which is slightly above what we had estimated initially,” said IOM Health Operation Coordinator Dr. Victor Nyange.

“We excluded pregnant mothers and children under one and we came up with the number of 68,000, but the number we got was little more than that,” he said.

Dr. Nyange said the next round of vaccinations would be conducted the last week of June.
