IOM, the International Organization of Migration, and the State Ministry of Health in Bentiu and partners have been training 160 health workers to respond to a potential outbreak of cholera. The training and an awareness campaign took place in the UNMISS Protection of Civilians (PoC) site and in other locations in the area.

IOM has provided refresher training to 90 health and hygiene promotion workers in the Bentiu PoC site in an effort to prevent cholera outbreak, IOM’s Hygiene Promotion and Public Health Coordinator John Muchiri said.

Dr. Weigoa Piny, a top health official in Bentiu, added that the Ministry of Health is also setting up a cholera treatment center in Bentiu Civil Hospital.

“We conduct public awareness about cholera, so we trained like 70 health workers and social mobilizers. We health workers normally do what they call prevention and for prevention apart from public health awareness, we also set up a CTC, which is a Cholera Treatment Center in Bentiu hospital”, Dr. Weigoa said.

The prevention efforts are supported by health partners –including MSF, UNICEF, WHO, Mercy Corps and IOM.
