2 March 20014 - Left without vital supplies after heavy fighting in their town during the South Sudan conflict, residents of the Unity capital Bentiu received a second ration of food over the past few days.

The World Food Programme (WFP) distributed food for another 15 days to each family from 27 February to 2 March, having handed out the first rations on 11 of last month.

WFP and International Organization for Migration teams led the registration and distribution exercise, which targeted 11,000 people, according to Jonas Wiahl, head of WFP implementing partner German Anger Action.

“With the help of UNMISS and other humanitarian partners, we can help our people,” said Unity Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Commission Acting Director Weil Yaei Garkose. “We will (also) give shelters to everyone who lost his house.”

Resident Vronika Galon said the first ration was insufficient for the full 15 days. “I am happy because we received another ration of food. But they should bring sugar and biscuits for children. We don’t have money to buy anything, we lost everything”.

Triza John, mother of three, stressed the need for shelters to protect their children from any ill effects of exposure to the hot sun all day.

Resident, Asuunta Waat, another mother of three, said, “I am so happy. We are fine now. We received oil and seeds.”
