Bor prisoners learning new skills

26 November 2013 - Seeking to boost prisoners’ skills, the Redeemed Christian Church of God donated various sewing items today to a prison in the Jonglei State capital Bor.

The donation to Bor Prison Center included assorted threads, sewing machine needles, lubricating oils for cleaning the machines, bundles, scissors, measurement tapes and chalk.

Coordinated by UNMISS Bor, the items were meant for a tailoring project introduced in the prison by the mission’s Corrections and Advisory unit.

Jacob Mogai Akol, a trainer inside the prison, stressed the importance of the donation, thanking UNMISS and the Church for their assistance.

Other projects the Corrections unit is managing inside the prison include goat rearing, carpentry and farming. UNMISS Corrections Officer Oladimeji Odusanya said they were assisting prisoners to obtain new skills they could use when released from prison.

The UN Food and Agriculture Organization has donated hoes, cutlasses and different seeds to the center through UNMISS’ Corrections unit.

Next week, the Corrections unit will deliver 50 blankets and 50 mosquito nets donated by the International Red Cross Society to Akobo Prison Center.
