Chinese engineers repair Wau road

6 November 2013 - Seeking to reduce malaria in the rainy season, UNMISS Chinese military engineers are repairing a mosquito-infested road in the Western Bahr El-Ghazal capital Wau.

“The road is overwhelmed by a number of big pools of dirty stagnant water and rubbish, which have turned into breeding basins for mosquitoes,” said community representative Germano Mou Aniin.

“This has become dangerous for our health in the area,” Ms. Aniin said. “As a result, many people are now sick for malaria.”

The Chinese engineers began clearing rubbish and sewage as well as leveling the 200-metre road on 5 November. They will now cover it with murran, fill the potholes and compact it.

“We do what we can do to help the local community out,” said the Chinese commander, Lt. Col YU Zigang. “What we are doing is conducive not only to the welfare of the local community but also to a good impact of the UN.”
