Seven Chinese Police UN Peacekeepers serving with the United Nations Mission in South Sudan have received their medals recognizing their commitment and service to the UN and the people of South Sudan during a ceremony at the UN base in Juba.

During the small and intimate ceremony, the peacekeepers were applauded for their hard work and invaluable contributions towards building durable peace in this conflict-affected country.

“I have worked very closely with you and you have continuously shown great professionalism and dedication in your work here at UNMISS and South Sudan,” said deputy Police Commissioner, Senior Superintendent Charles Katungi.

Since deployment to South Sudan in March 2017, the police officers based in the capital Juba, and Wau, Bahr el Ghazal region, were involved in an array of tasks including search operations in the UN Protection of Civilians sites, patrols, operation planning, press and information duties as well as served as part of the UN Formed Police Unit.

Speaking at the event, Chinese Ambassador to South Sudan, He Xiang Dong, said that the medalists had excelled in their duties despite challenges worsened by “war and weather.”

“You deserve to receive the medals. Wear them with pride,” he said.

This is the sixth rotation of police peacekeepers to be deployed to the UN mission in South Sudan.

China is the largest contributor of police to UN Peacekeeping among the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
