Crimes levels lessen in Malakal protection site – UNPOL advisor

13 November 2014 - There has been a notable fall in crime levels being reported at the UNMISS Protection of Civilians site in Malakal, Upper Nile State, the UN Police State Advisor said today.

“In the past three months, the rate of crime has gone down in the protection site,” said Allan Sangoroh. “This is a result of joint efforts by the UN security cluster and internally displaced people’s (IDPs) Peace and Security Council.”

Speaking about recent skirmishes among IDPs in the protection site, Mr. Sangoroh urged the displaced people to remember that the bases were set up strictly for protection.

“I appeal to everybody who is under protection of the United Nations to remember the reason (they) are here is because they need protection and peace,” he said.

Mr. Sangoroh appealed to the displaced people seeking safety at the site to embrace peace.

“Any acts that threaten peace … or lead to violation of (the rights of) any other person should be avoided,” he said. “Currently, both Peace and Security Council and the UN Police are working tirelessly towards peace and reconciliation among the IDPS and we need their support on this.”

UNMISS Protection site in Malakal is currently hosting more than 17,000 internally displaced people.
