DSRSG Zenenga assesses Malakal IDPs

5 August 2014 - To gauge the overall situation of internally displaced persons (IDPs) seeking shelter at the UNMISS base, Deputy Special Representative of the Secretary-General Raisedon Zenenga today visited the Upper Nile State capital Malakal.

“I came to listen to you and see for myself the conditions in which you are living after moving from the old protection site to the new one,” the Acting UNMISS Chief said in a meeting with IDP representatives.

“This is a work in progress,” he added. “We hope that eventually we will be able to move everybody to better conditions where the ground is dry.”

In another meeting with the mission’s state management team, Mr. Zenenga emphasized the mission’s commitment to protect civilians as laid out in its new mandate.

Protection of civilians is a priority,” he said. “We will continue to provide security and public order in UNMISS protection sites.”

Mr. Zenenga also visited Upper Nile State Governor Simon Kun Puoch.
