The UNMISS Bangladesh Navy Force Marine Unit (BANFMU) has rescued five people after their boat capsized along the River White Nile on Monday. The boat was coming from Ogod heading towards Ditang near Malakal when it overturned after running into stormy weather. It is also believed that the boat was overloaded.

At the time, the boat is said to have been approximately 500 meters from a BANFMU barge and another barge belonging to the World Food Programme (WFP). The BANFMU Boat Pool Sentry immediately responded launching a search and rescue operation which took place from 17:35 to 18:15. Two Light Patrol Craft (LPC) were used in the rescue efforts.

All passengers including their belongings, and the boat were brought safely ashore. Passengers received medical care.

Civilians who witnessed the operation said that they were grateful to UNMISS for their presence and for the humanitarian activities they continue to engage in.
