How to mitigate and resolve community conflicts – the Torit story

Radio Miraya/Gabriel Shadar/Filip Andersson

In efforts to mitigate conflicts at the grass root level, the UNMISS Civil Affairs Division in Torit has engaged a number of civil society groups to work with their respective communities.

One such group is the “Union of Monyomiji” in Torit, which literally translated as “Youth Union”.

Civil Affairs Division provided the group with technical support on how to approach and resolve conflicts, and facilitated the formation of a “peace network”.  This network is a kind of an early warning system that helps avert deadly communal clashes.

Lima Albino and Hakim Paridi are the chairman and secretary general for the Union of Monyomiji. In the Radio Miraya programme you can listen to here (see below), these two peacemakers talk about how their success in resolving conflicts was achieved.

Lima’s case is particularly poignant, as he continued to work for peace among belligerent communities even after having been injured by a gunshot in the process. By forgiving those who shot him, Lima serves as a true role model for peace and reconciliation.
