Humanitarian Coordinator visits Lakes State

8 February 2014 - Humanitarian Coordinator Toby Lanzer began a two-day visit to Lakes State today to assess the humanitarian situation and discuss movement of aid partners.

He first met with Lakes State Caretaker Governor Major General Matur Chut Dhuol.

“We came to Lakes to meet the governor to discuss the situation here, and to listen to his views on how things are going,” Mr. Lanzer told Radio Rumbek. “We will do everything that we can to help the IDPs (internally displaced persons).”

Lakes State is currently hosting an estimated 138,000 IDPs, mainly in Awerial County.

Accompanying Mr. Lanzer were Dutch Ambassador Kees van Baar, Head of OCHA South Sudan Vincent Lelei and Oxfam South Sudan Country Director Jose Barahona to assess performance of non-governmental organizations.

After the meeting with the Caretaker Governor, Mr. Lanzer traveled to Yirol to meet County Commissioner Makur Kulang Liei. He will end his visit in Minkaman, where he will assess the IDP area and speak with humanitarian partners.
