IDPs in Bentiu sensitized on peace agreement

More than 100 internally displaced persons (IDPS) at the UNMISS base in the Unity State capital Bentiu, today completed a sensitization workshop on South Sudan’s peace agreement.

Dialogue and Research Initiative, a non-governmental organization (NGO) based in Juba, conducted the four-day workshop, with funding from the UN Development Programme.

Veronica Nyawuok, an administrative officer with the NGO, said although people knew that the peace deal was signed in Addis Ababa, many were unware of details involved in its implementation.

“We need to carry the messages from peace agreement to those who did not go to school and those who have no access to the internet,” she said.

Participants, who included IDPs from eight counties of Unity State living at the UNMISS protection of civilians site, explained why it was vital to receive sensitization.

“This training is very important because it will help us to disseminate peace to our community,” said John Nhial Ruai, one of the participants.

He added that understanding the peace agreement and its implementation would also help in the process of reconciliation of communities, both at the state and national levels.

“(The training) is very important because peace is (what) will stop the war and (help unite) the people who have been separated the war,” said 30-year-old Mading Gai.

Mr. Gai said with the return of peace, the IDPs could return to live happily and freely in their homes, as well as be able to meet other people in South Sudan that they had not seen since going to the PoC site for safety.
