IDPs skilled on human rights and access to justice matters in Malakal

The protection of civilian’s is paramount in the UNMISS mandate. The Mission’s RRP section in Malakal held a three day workshop funded by the UNMISS in collaboration with the Humanitarian Development Consortium (HDC) in the UNHCR conference hall in Malakal Log base.

The training covered ongoing work to establish the Community Justice Center (CJC) inside the PoC site. The joint training of community groups engaged women’s and youth groups, on human rights, peaceful community integration, access to justice and the work of monthly Peace Caravans within the PoC site and across Malakal town using a public address system with famous musicians in order to disseminate peace messages.
 
“We talk to community in their various capacities within the POC site on human rights and access to justice by putting the protection of civilians first and we urge them to report any violations to human rights actors on the ground”, said Mr. Laban Nyaosi Osoro, HDC head.
 
“We hand over our support to victims of violence, and promotion of rights of vulnerable women and children caught up in the violence by providing 100 wheel chairs and 100 white canes to vulnerable persons with physical and sight impairment respectively in the POC site today “. Added the HDC head.

The UNMISS RRP section funded the initiative through the HDC as an implementing partner to quick impact projects that assist in helping improve the living conditions of IDPs.

“The training is part of wider project approve by UNMISS to be implemented at the POC in order to facilitating humanitarian assistance ; enhancing Human rights protection of IDPs as One of UNMISS mandate to protect the civilians,” said RRP team leader, Keikura Seingah Braima.

He also said, “This project will play a role in enhancing human rights protection of IDP’s.”

A participant called on community members to report human rights violations to the concerned actors.
 
“It is everyone’s responsibility to report human rights violations and abuses to concerned actors such as rights players on the ground,” said Wilson Akot Ajawin, one the of elders participants in the workshop.

In her remarks at the closing of the training the UNMISS head of field office in Malakal encouraged the IDP’s to cooperate with the Mission in order to uphold order and access to justice within the protection of civilian site.
 
“Let’s cooperate through keeping the order and calmness within the camp, especially the youth which know you are the future of this land, so please enhance and embrace peace amongst yourselves,” said Ms. Dewet.
